2018-2019 Campus Internship - Integrated Field Sciences Co-Op (Johnston, IA) (Job Number: 199360W-01)
Interns will be important members of a team that is responsible for conducting small plot research trials characterizing new corn and soybean insect traits; specialized phenotyping of inbreds and hybrids; production of seed for research use; and generating other plant observation data. The duration of the internship is May-November 2019.
Primary areas of focus for each position will be as follows:
Characterizing the efficacy and agronomics of transgenes and/or seed treatments for above- or below-ground insects on corn or soybeans
Conduct a small research project including an intern presentation at the end of the summer
Support multiple activities over throughout the internship with tasks including: planting, plot establishment and maintenance, plant sampling for analytical analysis, lab prep work, prep and artificial infestation of insects, and data collection; Assist with corn moisture sample collection and processing.
Collection of destructive and non-destructive phenotypic data from plots in the field. Hand harvest of research samples. Assist with multiple methods of sample processing in the lab.
During peak times of the year extended working hours will be required. These positions will also have a great opportunity to develop an understanding of other areas of field research on corn, soybean, and/or wheat by working with other groups at the Johnston Field Research Center.
Completion of introductory level college coursework in agronomy, plant sciences, horticulture and/or entomology with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Excellent written/verbal communication, computer and organizational skills are required
Candidates should possess a demonstrated ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
The candidate must have the ability to work as a strong team member in addition to working independently when needed
The intern must have a valid driver's license to travel to various research locations and be capable of working in varying ergonomic environments under field conditions
Basic knowledge of North American crop insect pests, crop production, and plant development is desired
Competency in plant science and entomology desired
