NATURE OF WORK
Responsible for assisting with and carrying out the design and production of technical experiments. Includes testing, analysis, equipment setup and maintenance, preparation of materials, and data reporting. Specific focus will be on the characterization of lactic acid bacteria strains and the application of probiotic stability as it relates product formulation.

SCOPE OF POSITION
The incumbent will be a member of the Madison-based R&D group, specifically the Probiotic Development group. The focus of this position is to conduct applied research that translates to product development of dietary supplements and some food and beverage applications. In this role, the incumbent will be expected to independently perform laboratory experiments to assess the stability and in vitro characterization of probiotic bacteria. The position will utilize traditional microbial plating techniques, as well as molecular biology techniques to quantify and characterize probiotics.
This position reports directly to a Scientist-Probiotics position. This position will work closely with other probiotic scientists on a project by project basis, but is also expected to be able to carry out experiments independently. It is expected that the incumbent will perform their work in accordance with sound scientific principles, as well as uphold the site policies and procedures for safety and ethics. In time, the position could also provide technical support for the sales force, customers, and marketing including direct customer interface and technical service support roles.
Operates in an office/laboratory environment. Full time, 40-hr per week. Some travel may be required.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Conduct applied research and product development with probiotic bacteria with an emphasis on culture stability in a wide range of food and dietary supplement systems.
Follow and apply analytical methods and standard operating procedures to laboratory duties.
Perform laboratory experiments to determine real-time stability of probiotic products in various applications.
Manage and conduct testing of finished probiotic products. Organize and analyze the resulting stability data for distribution to internal stake holders.
Keep up-to-date on trends and new technical developments by monitoring competitors' activities, current developed new methods of processing ingredients in applicable areas.
Assist customers by participating in in-house visits, answering technical questions, and provide technical services to customers and sales group.
Maintain clean work areas and ensure that equipment in the laboratory is properly maintained and is operational.
Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Experience commensurate with a BS or MS with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience.
To successfully perform the requirements of this position, the incumbent must possess a four-year microbiology, molecular biology, food science, food technology, biology or directly related degree.
Must be able to communicate effectively (verbal and written), and have appropriate organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to independently manage laboratory projects, to independently design and ambitiously carry-out scientific experiments.
Additionally, the ability to operate and trouble-shoot lab equipment, an ability to carry-out department objectives is necessary.
Experience in project management as well as in dietary supplements and their manufacture, powder flow and characterization, packaging is a plus.
Experience with standard operating procedures and GMP requirements is also a plus.
