The Process Improvement Engineer will provide day-to-day technical expertise and technical support for the G Unit autoclave processes at the site, and how those processes relate to the overall quality and yield of the polymers it produces. The successful candidate will join an integrated team including process-chemical, reliability-mechanical, and control system-electrical engineers. The responsibilities of the position include solution of process problems, identifying and implementing process improvements, and leading teams and/or projects for longer-term improvements and increased performance and safety of the unit. The role will also entail understanding and driving continuous improvement in product quality, and providing technical assistance as needed in troubleshooting and resolving product variances, both in-process and per end-use customer concerns.

The Process Improvement Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Providing technical expertise for the polymer processes at autoclave unit.

  • Leading or participating on teams to upgrade processes and products ranging from incremental improvements to major technology changes.

  • Mentoring and assisting in operations training.

  • Leading/participating in PSM Technology element teams and Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) teams.

  • Executing Change Management processes to execute Equipment and Process improvements (Process change requests, Change of design, Raw material qualifications, etc.).

  • Leading or serving on project teams to drive continuous improvement working on areas such as yield, uptime, fixed and variable cost reductions, and working capital reductions.

  • Understanding key process variables impacting product yield and quality and utilizing that knowledge to solve quality concerns and continuously drive improvement in product quality and performance for the customer.

This autoclave unit produces a broad range of specialized high-value polymers for films, molding, lamination, and compounding. These ethylene-based specialty products are used in a diverse array of applications that include food and materials packaging, building and construction, wire & cable, and automotive. Required Attributes:

  • B.S. or higher in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from ABET-accredited university. Advanced degree holders are encouraged to apply.

  • 3.0 minimum overall GPA or higher

  • 2 or more years of manufacturing experience preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work safety and effectively as a process engineer in an industrial or manufacturing environment. Higher experience levels encouraged to apply; job level and compensation offered to be commensurate upon experience.

Functional Skills

  • Broad-based knowledge of polymer process engineering. This can include: chemical reactors, distillation, heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, filtration, casting, extrusion, cutting, drying and bulk solids handling, mixing and packaging

  • Experience with Process Safety Management system requirements, pressure relief design, root cause failure analysis.

  • Capability in batch and continuous processes, and can include recycle loops

  • Ability to assimilate the unit operation information into actions that impact important criteria including process safety, ingredient yield, cycle time, product quality, and capacity.

  • Knowledge of process modeling software (Aspen)

  • Familiarity with PHA (Process Hazards Analysis) and/or Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), especially as a team member or leader

  • Knowledge of multivariate testing / Six Sigma processes a plus

  • Ability to learn and work independently.

  • Ability to work with others involved in a variety of functions including operators, mechanics, engineers of various disciplines, management, and other leaders.
