As an Intellectual Property Legal Assistant, you will be working in partnership with Intellectual Property (IP) attorneys, agents, and legal assistants. The IP Legal Assistant is responsible for maintaining an effective daily workflow and independently managing/coordinating IP administrative services to legal function and business clients. Prepares and files U.S. and non-U.S. technical documents that meet legal and country filing requirements of worldwide patent offices. Responds to official requests for information. Manages dockets and correspondence to facilitate timely filings and official responses to actionable due dates. Serves as a resource for workflow practices and processes. Has mastery understanding and hands-on experience of the US and non-US patent processes including all formal and procedural aspects of those processes. Key attributes include analysis and judgment, business acumen, communication, and managing productivity.

This role will be required to perform, but not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Actas a statistical and informational resource for businesses in operational andadministrative functions related to IP.Manage, interpret, compare, search and retrieve data and legalcorrespondence in external websites, databases, and corporate and business-specificdatabases (i.e., USPTO Private PAIR, PCT/EPO websites, internal docketingsystems, etc.). Assist attorney/agents, outside counsel, and international agentsto procure scientific/technical information from businesses to meet IPdeadlines. Interact with businesses inorder to independently coordinate information flow and meet business needs.

  • Maintaincurrent technical expertise of the statutes/rules of individual countriesworldwide and international treaties regarding specific requirements for a widevariety of legal documents. Determinewhich formality procedures should be followed for the country involved and inwhat sequence. Anticipate need for andprepare highly technical documents to meet all legal IP requirements of patentoffices worldwide. Independently respondto a variety of official requests such as status reports, requests for citedreferences and others. Generatedocuments having a high level of scientific/technical content.

  • Managedocketing and correspondence to prevent loss of IP rights and to assureaccurate and timely workflow for self and attorney/agent. Generate and coordinate multiple dockets formeeting all US and international deadlines to prevent abandonment or loss ofthe property rights involved.

  • Captureand maintain IP specific data within corporate patent/trademark/copyrightsystem to assist in the overall management of the DuPont IP estate. Calculate and enter data for all new IPfilings including determining correct priority data. Input and track US and internationaldeadlines and responses for pending cases.Create data records for IP acquired from other companies or divestedfrom DuPont IP estate, generate reports and contract appendices fordivestitures.

  • Assistattorneys and patent agents in interpreting, comparing, searching andretrieving IP information; conduct ad hoc reports; (i.e., docket, scheduler,statistics, costs and budget, etc.)

  • Serveas expert resource, role model and mentor on IP office practices and processesto internal customers (legal organization, business clients) and externalcustomers (agents, vendors and outside counsel).

  • Expertresource in utilizing external and internal business specific and corporatesystems, websites, databases, applications; i.e., Microsoft Office (Word,Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Sharepoint, etc.)


The following arerequired:

  • AHigh School Diplomaor higher

  • 3+ years of experienceas a Legal Assistant with U.S. patent procedural requirements and PCT practices

  • Efficiency, accuracy, flexibility,organization and excellent attention to detail

  • Excellent verbal and writtencommunications skills (including excellent proofreading, spelling,grammar, and punctuation)

  • Ability to prioritize work andmaintain a quick turn-around of workflow to meet deadlines

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced,dynamic environment

  • Demonstratedproficiency with MS Office Suite, MS Outlook, Adobe, and other documentmanagement systems

  • Team player and a positive attitudeis a must

The following arepreferred:

  • Previous experience with MemoTech,EFiling, private PAIR, EFS web and CPA Docketing is strongly preferred

  • Chemistry related patent experience
